In order to continue to recruit and retain high quality faculty and
staff, West Virginia University is joining many of our higher education
colleagues by expanding family-friendly benefits options to employees.
Benefits-eligible employees now have the opportunity to extend some WVU-administered benefits to other qualified adults (OQAs) and children in your household.
Please note, this excludes PEIA- and FBMC-administered benefits such as health insurance, dependent life insurance, dental and vision insurance, and flexible spending accounts, etc. unless the employee is legally married to the other qualified adult (as described below):
Important information for same-sex couples
Effective October 1, 2014 WVU employees may now cover same-sex spouses on their WV PEIA health insurance. The new law is considered a qualifying life event under Section 125 of the IRS Code, which will allow WVU employees to add their same-sex spouse to their PEIA health insurance. New employees or newly married PEIA participants have the month of the event, plus the two following months, to add their spouse to coverage. Approved changes-in-status will take effect the 1st of the month following the date the request was submitted. Available Benefits for Other Qualified Dependents
Your eligible Other Qualified Dependents may take advantage of some WVU-provided benefits opportunities equivalent to those offered to WVU benefits-eligible employees, such as:

● WVU Child Learning Center discounts
● WVU Employee Wellness activities
● WVU Faculty & Staff Assistance Program (FSAP)
● WVU Libraries privileges
● WVU Student Recreation Center memberships
Eligible Other Qualified Dependents will be issued WVU Employee Benefits Dependent Identification Cards to serve as proof of eligibility for participating services.

Other Qualified Adults (OQAs) are defined as individuals who reside with and are financially interdependent with the employee. For the purposes of registering an OQA for WVU-administered benefits, the individual will automatically qualify as an OQA if he or she is a benefits eligible employee’s spouse in a same-sex marriage or civil union, or partner in a recognized domestic partnership. Otherwise, the individual must meet the criteria outlined in the WVU Other Qualified Adults Guideline .
Enrolling Your Other Qualified Dependents
To enroll your Other Qualified Dependents, please complete a WVU Employee Benefits Dependent Identification Card Application Form and return to the WVU Benefits Office, along with copies of supporting documentation.
